Sheesham vs Tali vs MDF: How to Tell Real Solid Wood Furniture Apart

By Alfalah Furniture · Updated 17 June 2026

One of the most common ways furniture buyers in Pakistan overpay is buying laminated board that's sold as 'solid wood'. Here's what the common materials actually are, and how to check before you pay.

The materials, in plain terms

  • Sheesham (also called tali or rosewood): a dense, durable hardwood with a rich grain — the gold standard for Pakistani solid-wood furniture.
  • Kikar (acacia): a solid hardwood, cheaper than sheesham, strong but with a different grain.
  • Lasani / chipboard: compressed wood particles with a printed laminate surface — looks like wood, but is not solid wood.
  • MDF (medium-density fibreboard): fine wood fibres pressed into board — smooth and cheap, but swells with moisture and can't be repaired like solid wood.

Five ways to spot real solid wood

  • Weight: solid sheesham is noticeably heavy. If a 'wooden' bed feels light, be suspicious.
  • Grain continuity: on real wood, the grain flows over edges and corners; laminate has a printed pattern that stops at the edge.
  • Look underneath and inside drawers: makers often hide MDF or lasani on unseen surfaces — solid wood looks like wood there too.
  • Joints: traditional solid-wood joinery (mortise-and-tenon, dowels) is a good sign; stapled or glued board edges are not.
  • Price that's too good: genuine seasoned sheesham has a floor price. A 'sheesham' set far below market is usually board.

Why it matters

Solid sheesham can last decades and be re-polished or repaired. MDF and lasani typically fail within a few years, swell if they get damp, and can't be fixed. For a once-in-a-decade purchase like a bed or sofa set, the solid-wood premium usually pays for itself.

Our policy

Everything at Alfalah Furniture is built from 100% solid seasoned sheesham (tali) with a strict zero-MDF and zero-lasani guarantee. Browse our sofa collection or bed sets, or message us to ask about the exact wood in any piece — we're happy to show construction details on a video call.

Frequently asked questions

Is tali the same as sheesham?

Yes — 'tali' is the common local name for sheesham (Indian rosewood). They refer to the same hardwood.

Is MDF furniture bad?

MDF is fine for light, low-cost, short-term pieces, but it isn't as durable or repairable as solid wood and can swell with moisture. For beds and sofas meant to last, solid sheesham is the better value.

How can I be sure I'm getting solid wood?

Ask for a written solid-wood guarantee, check the weight and grain, inspect hidden surfaces, and buy from a maker who will show you the construction. We offer a zero-MDF, zero-lasani guarantee and live video inspection.
